Dami is a single mum of two. When her hours were cut, the maths stopped working — rent or food, heating or school shoes. The fridge emptied first. Then the hope.
"I didn't know who to tell. I just knew I couldn't do another week like that."
Within days of reaching out, a food parcel arrived at her door — groceries, toiletries, children's essentials. No forms waved in her face. No judgement. Just someone who listened first.
Food solves a week. Confidence solves a life. Dami joined our budgeting and money-management workshop, got help untangling benefits she never knew she could claim, and sat down with a mentor to rebuild her CV line by line.
"They didn't just hand me things. They handed me a plan."
Eight months on, Dami works part-time at a local nursery and is saving for a childcare qualification. Her children have what they need for school. And on the last Saturday of every month, she is back with us — this time packing parcels for the next family at the door.
"Someone stood with me versus all my odds. Now I get to be that someone."
Hardship was never meant to be the final word.

My name is Ms Ify N Ngwu, and I am the Founder of VAO Foundation CIC.
VAO Foundation was born from my personal journey of survival, resilience and hope. I have experienced difficult seasons in life — times when I desperately wished I had a helping hand, a supportive voice, someone to stand beside me or simply reassure me that I was not alone.
There were moments when the challenges felt overwhelming, but by the grace of God, I found the strength to keep going. Against all odds, I survived, rebuilt my life and came through the other side with a deeper sense of purpose.
I now believe that I survived my experiences for a reason: to use what I have endured to help other people navigate through their own difficult circumstances.
I understand what it feels like to struggle in silence, to feel forgotten, to face uncertainty and not know where to turn. That is why I want VAO Foundation to be the helping hand I once needed, the compassionate voice I once longed to hear and the source of hope that reminds people that their current circumstances do not have to define their future.
Through VAO Foundation, I want to stand with individuals, families and communities facing hardship, vulnerability and disadvantage. I want people to feel seen, heard, valued and supported — not judged or abandoned because of what they are going through.
Our mission is not simply to offer temporary assistance. It is to help people rediscover their confidence, rebuild their lives, recognise their potential and move towards independence, stability and lasting opportunity.
Sometimes, one act of kindness, one opportunity, one encouraging voice or one person who genuinely cares can change the direction of someone's life.
I want VAO Foundation to be that hand.

My story is proof that difficult beginnings and painful experiences do not have to be the end of the story. With the right support, encouragement and opportunity, people can overcome, rebuild and rise again.
